December 2, 2009 - Grace Construction Product’s Preprufe pre-applied waterproofing system is based on a unique patented technology – the only one of its kind in the industry, according to the company. Preprufe is designed for below grade slabs and blindside pre-applied applications. It is installed before the structural slab is poured or prior to casting the foundation walls. Preprufe’s Advanced Bond Technology allows concrete to fully adhere to the membrane, preventing ingress or migration of water between the membrane and the structure, unlike conventional non-adhering membranes, which are vulnerable to water ingress. 

Preprufe comprises a tough, durable HDPE film integrally bonded to layers of aggressive pressure-sensitive adhesives. The Preprufe family of products includes: Preprufe 300R, Preprufe 160R, Preprufe 200 waterproofing membranes, Preprufe 300LT and 160LT (for easier application at lower temperatures), Preprufe tapes, as well as Preprufe Tieback Covers (preformed details to seal soil retention tiebacks). The Preprufe portfolio of products can be used to create an integrated waterproofing system, and it is easy to install. Once applied, it is immediately trafficable and ready for placement of reinforcement and concrete.

At Construct2009 earlier this year, Grace highlighted its breakthrough Preprufe SCS Waterproofing System.  An innovative blindside system, Preprufe SCS is specifically designed to provide a high performance waterproofing solution for shotcrete foundation walls. With this product, designers no longer have to modify conventional waterproofing systems designed for cast-in-place foundation wall construction to make them suitable for shotcrete wall applications, an approach that has seen limited success and has led to projects with damaging water infiltration. With the Preprufe SCS System, building owners and designers who use shotcrete as an alternative to traditional cast-in-place foundation wall construction now have a system specifically engineered for this application.

The Preprufe SCS System consists of a durable composite sheet membrane applied against the soil retention system and a specially formulated hydrophilic expansive grout that is post-injected into the composite sheet through a series of injection ports. The membrane is designed to withstand the force of shotcrete application and control the thickness of the post-injected grout. Grout ports are installed prior to shotcrete application to enable grout injection, which occurs after shotcrete placement.  This post-injected grout fills and seals the system, providing ultimate waterproofing protection.

The result is a waterproofing system that prevents water leaks before they occur, minimizes the potential for water damage, and reduces construction schedule interruptions and unknown cost liabilities associated with repairs of foundation walls.

The Preprufe SCS System includes accessories such as tieback covers, detail tape and a hydrophilic sealant to ensure a complete waterproofing solution. The system is also designed to permit tie-in of the Preprufe SCS Membrane with other Grace waterproofing products, including the Preprufe 300R Under Slab Waterproofing Membrane and Bituthene or Procor Waterproofing Membranes, to provide a continuous waterproofing system for the entire structure. Since its introduction, the Preprufe SCS System has been used successfully on blindside projects on the West Coast of the United States where shotcrete foundations are common.
